Smart Tips for Safe Trick or Treating

With Halloween right around the corner, we put together some Smart Tips to keep you safe while trick or treating on Austin streets.

Choose routes with sidewalks and quiet neighborhood streets:  Choosing pedestrian-friendly routes is key to safe trick or treating.  Look for sidewalks, pedestrian crossings, and multi-use trails. Pick your route before you go to better avoid high traffic roads! Google maps pedestrian view offers a great way to scout out a route with sidewalks and low traffic. Here is an example route we created.

Incorporate lights or reflective wear on your costume: With days getting shorter most trick or treaters probably won’t make it home before sunset. Because of this, it is very important that your trick or treater can be seen by traffic on the streets. Reflective strips can be easily added to a costume, light up or eflective bracelets around ankles and wrists also help pedestrians stick out at night.

Go in groups: a group of trick or treaters is much easier to spot than one trick or treater, especially if they all have reflective wear!

Make sure your kids know the rules of the road: Talk to your kids about pedestrian safety before they head out, remind them to look left, right and left again before crossing a street. Walking on sidewalks is a safer option then on the road, and make sure that they know the pre-planned route and busy roads to avoid before they head out!

We here at Smart Trips Austin would like to wish all of you a safe and happy Halloween!
